Maarten Regtien : "Zo hoor ik het graag!" / "That's the spirit!"

"Zo hoor ik het graag!" is een improvisatie/compositie ontstaan in de coronajaren 2020/21.
Al jaren speel ik geheel vrije pianoimprovisaties in de traditie van Keith Jarrett en omdat de optredens grotendeels stillagen in de coronatijd, besloot ik een vrije improvisatie voor drie piano’s op te nemen, een reeds lang in mijn geest ronddwalend geluidsidee.
En zo geschiedde: thuis heb ik een mooie Seiler-concertpiano staan met goed onderscheidbare klankkleuren in de registers, en al improviserend - solo en samenspelend met de opnames - heb ik voor drie piano's (en zes pianisten) aan materiaal opgenomen.
Bij het samenvoegen van de diverse opnames tot een groot stuk, liet ik me al snel verleiden tot het creëren van mijn ideale pianocompositie: een samensmelting van mijn improvisaties en mijn klassieke muziek, vandaar de titel ”Zo hoor ik het graag!”
Het resultaat is een polyritmisch en polytonaal geheel met invloeden van mijn improvisaties, mijn piano-percussie techniek (zie mijn compositie "The Nemirovsky Grand Sonata" - 2008), de minimal music van Simeon ten Holt en de pianolacomposities van Conlon Nancarrow. De laatste minuut van het heftige slot is een ode aan deze geweldige componist: een keiharde compromisloze boogie woogie in de overdrive.
"Zo hoor ik het graag!" staat in zijn geheel op YouTube, alsmede een aantal korte uitsnedes ter demonstratie van de verschillende gebruikte technieken.
"Zo hoor ik het graag!" ("That's the spirit!" / literally "That's how I like to hear it!") is an improvisation / composition which originated in the corona years 2020/21.
For years I have been playing total free piano improvisations in the tradition of Keith Jarrett and because performances largely stopped in the corona era, I decided to record a free improvisation for three pianos, a sound idea that has been wandering in my mind for some time.
Thus it happened: at home I have a beautiful Seiler concert piano with clearly distinguishable timbres in the registers, and while improvising - solo and playing together with the recordings - I recorded material for three pianos (and six pianists).
When combining the various recordings into one large piece, I quickly let myself be tempted to create my ideal piano composition: a fusion of my improvisations and my classical music, hence the title "That's how I like to hear it!"
The result is a polyrhythmic and polytonal melting pot with influences from my jazzy improvisations, my piano-percussion technique (see my composition " The Nemirovsky Grand Sonata " - 2008), the minimal music of Simeon ten Holt and the piano compositions of Conlon Nancarrow. The last minute of the composition/improvisation is an ode to this great composer: a hard-hitting uncompromising boogie woogie in overdrive.
